How We Make Decision is a Ted on choice, how they are made, how they are influenced and and what they mean. Sheena Iyengar explains that people's seemingly individual choices are much less individual then they perceive them to be. She explains that people from other countries make decision as a community in harmony, in the United States decisions are much more individualized, more personal. This can hinder people's choice making abilities, as in the case of 12 Angry men. Most of these men firmly believe in the choice they made, none more evident then that of juror 3 and 8. Their opinions go head to head several time in the duration of the play, each of them trying to persuade the other jurors to choose their side. Iyengar says that the choices people make are based off their preferences and the preference of those the look up to and trust. In 12 Angry Men the jurors all have their own separate views on the murder, but as the story goes on and juror 8 argues his case the jurors begin to like him more, that is all except 3. They begin to agree with him more, for example juror 5's first vote is guilty buy once 8 talks about the fact that where you come from doesn't determined who as a person is, 5 changes his vote. When 8 says this he appealed to 5 and in the process made 5 change his preference to match his own. The ability to make choices like that of the choice in 12 Angry Men fight can cause problems can cause fights and it does in the play.
Sheena Iyengar's Ted talk on choice opened my eyes to the way I make choice today and how much I take those choices for granted. She also helped me realize that sometimes too many choices can be a bad thing. I had never once in my life thought choices as bad, Iyengar proved to me that too much of a good thing can hurt us as a county. I hope I can more incisive and careful with my choices from here on out.
