This is proven in "The Crucible" gossip is the fuel in this story in this story, it feeds everything. There would be no witch trails without the gossip in Salem. People were accused of witch craft left and right over mere tidbits of gossip. And through the spread of gossip readers learn so much about Puritans, readers discover their morals and beliefs. Gossip is a form of anthropology, how ever odd that may seem. Its a way of expressing ones self, and that is what the people of Salem did. They told truths and lies revealing how they felt about others and how they felt about life around them. If they felt there were being cheated out of their land that would gossip of witches and magic, these people would be hung. This reveals to readers how much land was valued, it reveals that morally people were fine with condemning others to death without definitive proof. Gossip is a window into their world and it will be a window into ours in the future to come.
Elaine Lui's Ted Talk really opened my eyes into the powers of gossip and what it tells about our self's. I had never really thought of gossip as more then a childish search of knowledge, but now I will be a little more careful with my gossip because I don't know who will hear it and ow it will affect me and those surrounding me
